Green landscape with NewTree Ranch owner Edward Newell

May is one of the times of year I feel most connected to the ranch.

There’s a shift that happens. Not all at once, but enough that you begin to notice it everywhere. The days stretch. The warmth settles in. The bees are fully back to work, the butterflies return, and the garden starts to move with a kind of quiet momentum.

The last of the tulips begin to fade, and what follows comes quickly. Asparagus is still coming through. Snow peas and sugar snap peas are everywhere. The garden is almost entirely green, in more shades than you can count. It’s not just growth, it’s a kind of fullness.

This is also when we begin to gather more of our lives outside.

What I’ve come to appreciate is that it’s not really about the table itself, but what happens around it. Long tables filled with food that was growing just hours before. Simple plates, fresh peas, spring flowers, and people settling in without needing much else.

The conversations last a little longer. The light holds just enough that no one feels rushed.

There’s something about this time of year that naturally brings people closer. Not in a forced way, but in a way that feels easy and shared. You start to realize that the experience isn’t just about being here, it’s about being part of something that is already in motion.

When I say the ranch comes alive, I don’t just mean the land …I mean everything.

Springtime at NewTree Ranch

The vegetables.

The flowers.

The animals.

The bees.

The birds.

The people who spend time here.

After a season of rest, everything returns with a kind of energy that feels both grounding and alive at the same time.

And what I’ve noticed, over time, is how people leave.

There’s a shift there, too.

A little more present. A little more connected. Reenergized in a way that’s hard to explain, but easy to feel. I know I feel it myself this time of year.

To me, that’s what this season is really about.

Not just growth, but connection. Not just being here, but being part of it.
